What is Laminate Flooring?
Laminate flooring is a man-made material often composed of a plastic or wood core and a surface layer that resembles metal, wood, stone, ceramic tiles or any other hard type of surface.
The laminate was created in the 1950s for commercial buildings because it was less expensive than natural materials. They have been around for years but have recently gained popularity among homeowners because they are less costly and easy to maintain.

Laminate flooring is a good option for many homeowners because it can be installed regardless of the layout style. It can be installed over existing flooring or laid from scratch to create new flooring. Most laminate floors come in one piece with adhesive backing, which gives you the freedom to place them in any room. It can also be cut to fit around objects, doorways and staircases with ease. Finally, it is often waterproof, so it is an excellent option for basements or bathrooms with high humidity levels.

How is Laminate Flooring Installed?
It can even be installed in rooms without the proper subfloor, ideal for basement renovations or repairs after flooding. The installation process will require some preparation beforehand – this includes moving all objects and furniture, covering the flooring underneath, and finally laying down adhesive strips for installation. But once installed, laminate can look very realistic and beautiful with minimal upkeep.
If you decide to install laminate flooring yourself, it’s important to know what type of subfloor is underneath and if it can support the new laminate. If not, you may need to have it professionally installed. Never try to install laminate flooring in bathrooms or other high humidity areas because the moisture can cause expansion and damage to the installation over time.
How Should You Care for Laminate?
As with any flooring choice, there are some maintenance tips to keep in mind for laminate flooring.
Make sure to wipe up spills as soon as they happen to avoid stains and removal of grout detail. Don't drag heavy furniture across the floor or leave anything that emits heat (like furniture or baseboard heaters) against the walls where they might scorch the surface; this will also make the flooring less resistant to scratches. Also, avoid using abrasives like steel wool or scouring pads on laminate floors because they can scratch the surface. Using a soft cloth and warm water for cleaning is ideal.
Finally, never use any floor cleaners or finishes on laminate floors because they can severely damage the surface and reduce durability.

Hayden and his crew were great to work with. They installed laminate flooring on steps and in bedroom replacing very old carpet. It took just a couple of days to remove all of the carpet and install new flooring. Everyone said steps are tricky to do but they did it and the minor issues that came up they presented alternatives and overcame the issues. It was all done for exactly what was quoted also.

On time and professional floor refinishing, beautiful work! Estimate was reflective of work and there were no surprise cost. We had an absolutely wonderful experience with Footprints Floors! We had a crisis in the DIY installation of vinyl plank flooring, when we discovered that the material we purchased was not going down as we anticipated. We called Footprint Floors and Hayden was so responsive, being able to come out the same day to take a look at it. He then was able to schedule his crew to come the same day! We were under great pressures because the carpet installation in the same space was to be in the next day or two. The crew from Footprints came out to try to lay the floor, and they too discovered it wouldn't work (it ended up being defective). These 1 1/2 inch red Oak floors from 1955 turned out amazing with A sealer and clear water based finish. We had Footprints Floors finish up flooring in our condominium recently. Despite having to blend with our older flooring installed three years prior, they were able to make the whole floor blend seamlessly. Additionally they were very professional, efficient and kind to work with. Since I have a daughter who is in a wheelchair and is very medically fragile, it can be difficult to have work done within our home. They were so quick and meticulous we were able to get the work done while she was out of the house for school and have minimal clean up before she returned. We hired Footprint Floors to remove the carpet on our second floor and stairs, and to install flooring to match what we already had on our main floor. They were prompt in communication with us, and helpful in guiding us to get the correct materials and identify solutions for components to the project we hadn’t considered. On time and professional floor refinishing, beautiful work! Estimate was reflective of work and there were no surprise cost.
